Presidents Memo August 2017 No 34

Canterbury Region’s Biennial Retreat at Lake Rotoiti, in the Nelson Lakes District, “Stitching by the Sea” in Kaikoura has morphed into “Stitching by the Lake”.  What a wonderful weekend, thank you to Paula Hucklesby for organizing the venue, a great cook, and entertainment, by way of Raffle, Sales Table, and discussion on the Resources Folio and how Guilds can benefit from using the projects for group workshops.   Thank you to Christine for her project.   The only downside was that only three Guilds in the Region participated.   Mainly because of the distances to travel.

Bella Lane, is at present touring around the Regions, Tutoring Embroidery techniques from her homeland of Peru.    Canterbury Guild is hosting this coming weekend, and I am really looking forward to hosting Bella as well.

We are all looking forward to Nelson’s “The Centre of Things” Conference this is going to be amazing opportunity for us all to visit sunny Nelson, and have a wonderful relaxing stay in the Central City, with everything within walking distance.   All the information you will need will be presented in their Registration Booklet, coming out in October with the Threads Magazine.

We were saddened to hear of Gay Eaton’s death on 8th July.   Gay a member of Otago Guild, initiated the Wanaka School of Embroidery 33 yrs ago, wrote two books, Wessex Stitchery and Ukrainian Whitework.   Gay also compiled a publication, Techniques and Tools of Embroidery for the Wanaka School of Embroidery 25th Anniversary.   In 2007 Gaynor Mary Eaton was awarded the Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to Embroidery.

Last Friday evening I was privileged to Open Canterbury Guild’s Threadworks 2017 Exhibition.

I do hope all those effected by the recent storms and floods, are starting to dry out and getting back to normality.
