Owen Davies, Travelling Tutor

Apollo Butterfly Workshop, Blenheim July 30-31st 2016

When I signed up for Owen’s class, for me it was not just about the finished piece but also the opportunity to be taught by a renowned, professionally-trained embroiderer who we haven’t seen in this country before and to do it without leaving home - a chance not to be missed.  There were only eight of us in our class, four from Blenheim and four from Nelson, the only ones in the country to do the butterfly workshop.  That worked to our advantage and to keep costs down the local ladies billeted our friends from Nelson - June, Paula, Christine and Annette.  We also had a pot luck tea on the Friday night to meet Owen, a lovely way to start the weekend.   Yes it was an “advanced” class but we were all up for the challenge and Owen was such a talented, knowledgeable and patient tutor, lots of fun in the classroom and very generous with his time.  We finished the class determined that we would finish our butterflies.

Since then the four Marlborough ladies – Sue Burdon, Glenys Fry, Ngaire Lawrence and myself have met for one afternoon each week in each other’s homes to keep the momentum going.  This has worked very well, and I doubt that I would have finished mine already if it weren’t for the continued support we’ve given each other.

On a personal note Owen was an absolute delight to host, when he left I felt like I had made a life-long friend and I really hope we are able to have him back to tutor us again some day.  I would recommend his workshops without reservation.
